  Regulations
1. In order to heighten the standard of research in the humanities and social sciences, to promote interdisciplinary academic integration as well as innovative, outstanding humanities and social sciences research, and to increase the value and influence of these fields of study, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), in accordance with Article 8 of the university’s organizational regulations, has established the National Cheng Kung University Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS).

2. CHASS’s responsibilities include:
    2.1 The integration of domestic and international resources and research capacities with those of NCKU’s relevant departments and centers.
    2.2 The strengthening of regionally focused research themes, and the development of research focused on the relationship between Taiwan and globalization.
    2.3 The establishment of highly active, thematic research teams, and the training of young scholars in the humanities and social sciences.
    2.4 The promotion of other research related to the humanities and social sciences.

3. The director of CHASS is responsible for oversight of all CHASS affairs. Candidates for this joint-appointment position should be humanities or social sciences professors, or researchers of an equivalent grade, to be appointed by the university’s president.

4. Three sections are to be established to facilitate the effective execution of CHASS duties. The duties of each section are as follows:
    4.1 Administrative Section: responsible for CHASS administrative duties, the establishment of the CHASS website, and the release of information regarding CHASS activities and research results.
    4.2 Research and Education Section: responsible for planning and developing thematic research groups, enabling efficient use of research and teaching capacities in relevant fields, promoting interdisciplinary academic development in the university and nationally, as well as training young scholars.
    4.3 Planning and Integration Section: responsible for integrating university research resources with other available domestic resources, as well as promoting cooperation and academic exchange between the university and domestic and foreign institutions related to the humanities and social sciences.
    Each section is lead led by a section coordinator responsible for overseeing the implementation of section affairs. Section coordinators are jointly appointed academics of the assistant professor grade or higher, or researchers or professionals of an equivalent grade or higher, to be appointed by the director of CHASS.
    CHASS must appoint senior professors, instructors, researchers, or employees from the field of humanities or social sciences fields, or project professors hired with school funds; the specifics of the evaluation of candidates will be determined by CHASS.

5. An Advisory Committee consisting of nine to eleven members in total is to be established to provide advice on research development. The president of NCKU will serve as chair to the Committee. One of the vice president of NCKU. the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, the dean of the College of Social Sciences, the dean of Research and Development are ex officio members of the committee, and the president of NCKU is responsible for appointing as members renowned domestic and international scholars from the humanities and social sciences. The Committee members will serve two-year terms, and may be reappointed. The Committee will meet at least once per year, and ad hoc meetings will be convened as when necessary. The university will arrange for office space for CHASS, and expenses will be allocated from the annual budget, while external funding for research should be sought after actively.

6. The CHASS Steering Committee is responsible for reviewing CHASS’s research projects, and for the promotion of research undertaken by CHASS. The CHASS director will serve as Committee convener, and will recommend to the university president six to ten NCKU educators or researchers from relevant fields to be jointly appointed to the committee. Committee members will serve two-year terms, and may be reappointed. The Committee will meet at least once per year, and ad hoc meetings will be convened as necessary.

7. The university will supply administrative and research space for CHASS, and expenses will be allocated from the University’s annual budget, while external funding for research should be sought after actively.

8. The class-hour requirements of educators appointed to positions in CHASS will be decreased in accordance with NCKU regulations; only professors or instructors serving as fulltime researchers may apply to be exempt from class-hour requirements. Educators appointed to CHASS positions may apply for allocation of residence according to the same guidelines as visiting scholars.

9. The above regulations must be approved by the University Senate before implementation; the same applies to instances of revision.
